Sometimes, a root canal will fail to relieve pain or will become reinfected. In these cases, a new root canal (called a retreatment) can be performed. The previous root filling material is removed, and the canal space is modified to address any shortcomings in the original treatment. Most retreatments require two appointments to allow an antibacterial dressing to adequately disinfect the canal space.
